  WHAT HAPPENED?

  Inter Miami will have $5.3 million in General Allocation Money (GAM) to use as a resource to help retool its roster in 2025, this disclosure was part of Major League Soccer's release of franchise totals for the upcoming season.

  Although Miami has a high total, in part due to its decision to trade Leonardo Campana to New England Thursday, it isn't the league leader in those funds. Atlanta United, who sold over $50 million in players last year, lead MLS with $6.5 million. United are followed by St. Louis CITY SC, who have $5.3 million and San Diego FC, who have $5.1 million. Defending champions LA Galaxy have $2.4 million. These numbers are from Thursday's statement from the league and will be updated throughout the year as teams use the GAM funds.

  GAM can be used for reducing salary budget charges, covering loan or transfer fees, signing Homegrown players, and trading for assets like players or roster slots.

  THE BIGGER PICTURE

  With a significant GAM fund, Miami could be a major player in both the international and domestic market when it comes to shopping for players. The team has an open DP spot and has been linked with several names including Brazilian superstar Neymar. GAM could also be used to acquire players in trades within MLS.

  Atlanta, which has made ambitious moves in the past, could end up also pursuing some big targets ahead of the 2025 season.

  Each MLS team gets a base number of $2.93 million annually to utilize. Incoming club San Diego FC got an additional $2.77 million for its first year in the league. Teams can acquire more GAM from through transfers, trades, qualifying for CONCACAF Champions Cup, missing the MLS playoffs, the third Designated Player charge distribution, and the MLS Expansion Draft.

  In addition, clubs selecting the U22 Initiative Roster Construction Path can receive up to $2 million extra GAM and a fourth U22 Initiative roster spot, with decisions required before the 2025 roster compliance date.
